The Literacy Challenge

The Reading First initiative drew national attention to the literacy crisis in the early grades, with a focus on foundational literacy skills - phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension - that are essential for children to develop in their first years of formal education.

That challenge still remains, as we vigilantly work with students to give them the skills they need and close the achievement gap.

And, the challenge of building proficiency does not end at grade 3. In fact, the U.S. Department of Education reports that eight million students in grades four through eight are struggling readers.

While the challenges are significant, Destination Reading offers a proven solution, based on empirical research and practice, that helps identify, prevent, and remediate reading difficulties at all grade levels - from elementary through high school.
