The Math Challenge

Nearly one-half of U.S. eight-year-olds cannot multiply or divide whole numbers accurately, and half of 13-17-year-olds cannot compute correctly with fractions. This means that many students are ill prepared to study algebra in middle school, and lack rudim entary skills required for entering college.

Given the poor performance, the urgent to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics is critical, and the traditional approaches are no longer the only alternative.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) reports that the use of technology in mathematics instruction now makes the study of certain mathematics topics possible.
